Explanation:

Given -

  • On heating Copper (II) nitrate, black copper oxide O2 and a brown gas X is formed.

To Find -

  • Identify the gas X
  • Name the type of reaction
  • Write balanced chemical equation of the reaction.

According to the question -

  • Cu(NO3)2 --Δ--> CuO + O2 + X

Balanced Chemical equation :-

2Cu(NO3)2 --Δ--> 2CuO + O2 + 4NO2

  • Copper (II) Nitrate on heating gives Black coloured CuO, brown gas NO2 and O2.

Hence,

The gas X is NO2

This is the type of decomposition reaction.

Additional information :-

Types of chemical reaction :-

  • Combination reaction -

Those reaction in which two or more substances combined to form a single substance, are called combination reaction.

  • Decomposition reaction -

Those reaction in which a compound splits up into two or more simpler substances are known as decomposition reaction.

  • Displacement reaction -

Those reaction in which one element takes the place of another element in a compound, are known as Displacement reaction.

  • Double Displacement reaction -

Those reaction in which two compounds react by an exchange of ions to form two new compounds are called double displacement reaction.
