Weight = 80 kg * 9.81 m/s^2 = 784.8 N.  

The fact that the scale reads 900N, which is more that the person weight means that the descending elevator is in a state of deceleration ( upward acceleration ).  

Use, F = m * a.  

900 N - 784.8 N = 80 kg * a -------> a = 115.2 N / 80 kg = 1.44 m/s^2 upward.  

Consider the person and the elevator .  

T is the tension in the cable  

Total mass = 1080 kg  

Total weight = 1080 kg * 9.81 m/s^2 = 10594.8 N.  

F = m * a.  

T - 10594.8 N = 1080 kg * 1.44 m/s^2  

T = 10594.8 N + 1555.2 N = 12150 N
