(a) A neutralization reaction is when an acid and a base react to form water and a salt and involves the combination of H+ ions and OH- ions to generate water. The neutralization of a strong acid and strong base has a pH equal to 7.

(b)When an acid reacts with metal, a salt and hydrogen are produced: acid + metal → salt + hydrogen An example: nitric acid + calcium → calcium nitrate + hydrogen The salt that is produced depends upon which acid and which metal react.

(c)Acids react with metal carbonates and hydrogencarbonates in the same way. These reactions produce salt, water and carbon dioxide. Observations: green solid copper(II) carbonate disappears, blue solution produced, heat released, bubbles.
