The member is elected for seat representing population of certain territorial area called as parliamentary constituency, the number of constituencies (seats) are allocated to each State and select Union Territories (NCT of Delhi, UT of Puducherry) in such manner that the ratio between number of seat and the population of the State (and UT) is, so far as practicable, the same for all States (and UTs).
The division of each state (and UT) into territorial constituencies is done in such a manner that the ratio between the population of each constituency and the number of seats allotted to it is, so far as practicable, the same throughout the State (and UT).
