Explanation: As he go from home to school 1 kilometre and came back to home from school also 1 kilometre. Henceforth, his total distance became 1 kilometre + 1 kilometre that is 2 kilometres. But his displacement is zero because if the initial position or the final position of an object is same then the displacement is zero.

Another example, let an object starts moving from an initial position that is A and go to B then the object returned back to A and stop there. Therefore it be it's final position too. Therefore, the answer is supported that the displacement is zero and we also know that the shortest path between two points is displacement.
