Question
A charity trust decides to build a prayer hall having a carpet area of 300 square metres with its length one metre more than twice its breadth.
(i) Find the length and the breadth of the hall.
(ii) Which mathematical concept is used in the above problem?
(iii) By building a prayer-hall, which value is depicted by the trust?
Answer
SOLUTION
(i)
Suppose the breadth of the hall is x meters.
Then, its length should be (2x + 1) meters.
. Now, area of the hall = (2x + 1). x m2= (2x2 + x) m2
So, 2x2 + x = 300 (Given)
Therefore, 2x2 + x – 300 = 0
So, the breadth of the hall should satisfy the equation 2x2 + x – 300 = 0 which is a quadratic equation
(2x2-25x-24x-300)=0
x(2x+25)-12(2x+25)=0
(x-12)(2x-25)=0
(Breadth can not be negative , hence 2x-25=0 can not be the solution for breadth)
Breadth= x-12=0
x=12m
and,
Therefore,
Length=2x+1= 2×12+1= 25 m
(ii)
The mathematical concept involved here is solving of Quadratic Equation
(iii)
The values depicted by the charity is working good, worshipness of god and humanity in the favour of mankind.
