Tropical Rainforests

Tropical rainforests are dense evergreen forests that comprise a great variety of plant life and are found in areas having rainfall above 200 cm. The trees here are green throughout the year. They include the Western Ghats, forests in the north-eastern states and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The type of trees found here are mahogany, ebony, rose wood and rubber.

Tropical Deciduous Forests

Tropical deciduous forests are also called monsoon forests and cover most parts of India where rainfall is between 100 cm and 200 cm. These forests shed their leaves during the dry period of the year. The trees of these forests are of commercial importance. Some of them include teak, sal, sandalwood, shisham, mulberry, mahua, neem and khair. They are found mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and parts of Maharashtra.
