Answer:

(a) Advantages of friction:

*It helps a moving object to stop.

*It resist the extra motion producer by certain objects to avoid accidents.

*It help us to walk casually.

Disadvantages of friction:

*It is the reason for the wear and tear of the soles of the shoe which damages the shoes.

*It is the reason for the worning out of tyres of vehicles.

*Frictionless places are the major centres of accidents.

(b) Friction is a necessary evil because it is as necessary to walk and carry out daily locomotive activities but as danger to cause accidents in the frictionless places.

Answer:

(1) The advantages and disadvantages of friction are -

Advantages of Friction:

  • Friction is responsible for many types of motion.

  • It helps us walk on the ground.

  • Brakes in a car make use of friction to stop the car.

  • Asteroids are burnt in the atmosphere before reaching Earth due to friction.

  • It helps in the generation of heat when we rub our hands.

Disadvantages of Friction:

  • Friction produces unnecessary heat leading to the wastage of energy.

  • The force of friction acts in the opposite direction of motion, so friction slows down the motion of moving objects.

  • Forest fires are caused due to the friction between tree branches.

  • A lot of money goes into preventing friction and the usual wear and tear caused by it by using techniques like greasing and oiling.

(2) Friction is an evil:

It is an evil because it results in energy wastage. Due to friction we have to spend lot of energy and money to make things move and make life move on. Wear and tear happens because of friction. In cycling, there should not be more friction between the road and tyre of cycle. If there is more friction, there will be more energy wastage of the rider. In cycle and motor mechanics we use grease to reduce friction to increase efficiency. In roller skating there should be less friction for better performance.

I hope this would help you out.. ☺️
