1. Although cell organelles have specific structures and perform specific functions but they cannot be called structural and functional units of living organisms. This is so because they can perform their functions only when they are within a living cell. They cannot function outside the cell as an independent unit.

2.the layer surrounding cell membrane is called cell wall. this is present to protect them from temperature variations,high wind speed and atmospheric moisture

3. yes the size of the cell  has no relationship with the body size.

let me explain with an example: the nerve cells in both elephant and rat are long and branched and perform the same function. but they differ a lot in their body size.
