Question :

Explain the significance of three quantum numbers in predicting the positions of an electron in an orbit.

Answer :

Quantum numbers : A set of four quantum numbers which gives complete information about any electron in an atom. These are :

1] Principal quantum number 'n' determines the size and to large extent the energy of the orbital. It also identifies the shell namely, K (n = 1), L (n = 2), M (n = 3), N (n = 4).

2] Azimuthal quantum number 'l' is also known as orbital angular momentum or subsidiary quantum number which defined the three dimensional shape of the orbital. For a given value of n, l = 0 to n - 1.

3] Magnetic quantum number 'ml' gives information about the spatial orientation of the orbital with respect to standard set of co-ordinate axis. For any sub-shell (defined by 'l' value) 2l + 1 values of ml are possible and these values are from -l to +l.

4] Spin quantum number 'ms' refers to orientation of the spin of the electron i.e., clockwise or anti-clockwise. For a given value of m, s = +1/2 and -1/2
