let the cost of one table be x and of 1 chair be y.
5x-8y=150
putting y equal to 240
5x-1920=150
5x=150+1920=2070

let the cost of one table be x and the cost of one table be y
then according to the question....the difference between the cost of 5 tables and 8 chars is 150
so... that means
5x - 8y = 150
this is the required linear equation
and in order to find the cost of one table if the cost of one chair is 240....we just need to replace y in the equation above by 240 since y represents the cost of one chair
putting 240 in place of y we get
5x - 8(240) = 150
further solving it gives:
5x = 2070
x =  \frac{2070}{5}
x = 414
thus the cost of one table is 414 if the cost of one chair is 240
