Answer:
A 22-year-old biker was killed and two others were injured when three motorcycles crashed into one another near the Bandra Worli Sea Link late on Sunday. The accident took place just 500 metres away from the toll booths. Two-wheelers are not allowed on the sea link.
Abhijeet Gurav, 22, was riding a two-wheeler while his friend Tushar Pagi, 18, was riding pillion. The two were heading home after visiting Bandra Bandstand, where they had gone to see Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s house, when Pagi told Gurav that he needed to urinate. Gurav parked the bike by the side of the road. While he was alone on the stationary bike, a speeding biker, later identified as Zafar Shaikh, 19, crashed into him from the rear.
“The two bikers fell on the road and had been lying there for at least five minutes when another biker came crashed into the two bikes. Shaikh’s bike caught fire and suffered burns, while one of the bikes fell on Gurav, inflicting severe head injuries,” said an officer from Bandra police station, who did not wish to be named.
The police were initially unable to get the second bike’s registration number as it was totalled in the crash. However, later they found it belonged to Shaikh. Another biker, identified as Akash Rajput, was also injured along with Shaikh, said officials.
The bikers were taken to Bhabha hospital, where Gurav was declared dead owing to severe head injuries. Though he had a helmet, it had been hanging from the bike’s handle when Shaikh’s bike crashed into him, said an officer who visited the accident spot.
The Bandra police have registered a case of rash driving, causing death due to negligence and causing injury against Shaikh. Both he and Rajput have been admitted to private hospitals, where they are recuperating. The police said Shaikh will be placed under arrest once he is discharged.
Biker’s mother not yet told of his death
In her home in Andheri, the mother of 22-year-old Abhijeet Gurav believes her son will be back in a few days. Owing to her health problems, her family has not told her that Gurav died in an accident on Sunday night.
Gurav, an only child, lived with his parents in MIDC, Andheri (East). When he was declared dead, his father decided to keep the news from his mother.
“His mother has health problems. His father has only told her that he met with an accident injured his leg,” said a police officer, who did not wish to be named.
However, she demanded to see Gurav’s friend Tushar Pagi, 18, who was with him at the time of the accident. Seeing him unharmed, she believed her husband’s claim that their son had only been injured. Now the family is worried about how to break the news to her.
Gurav and Pagi had gone to Bandra to see the house of actor Salman Khan at Bandstand, where they waited for about 30 minutes before one of them then decided to take another ride. When they were near the sea link, Pagi told Gurav he needed to urinate and Gurav stopped the bike on the roadside, the police said.
“I was returning to the bike and was just five feet away from Gurav when another bike crashed into him, throwing him onto the road,” Pagi told the police in his statement.
Gurav had met with an accident a year ago, after which his parents did not let him take the bike out often. He had been riding his father’s bike on Sunday night. His father works in a private company. Gurav had also started working shortly after graduating but he was unemployed at the time of the accident, said an officer.
Zafar Shaikh and Akash Rajput are both college students. While Shaikh is a resident of Kurla, Rajput lives in Kherwadi, police said. The Bandra police refuted reports that the bikers had been performing stunts.
Hope it helps.
