1) Due to the contact with the heated object, the Mercury in the head of the thermometer melts and tend to rise. This is the reason for the rise in the level of Mercury in the thermometer.

2) A few sharp shakes are given to the clinical thermometer so as to lower the level of the already risen Mercury level.
