A Vernier caliper is a precision instrument that measures internal dimensions, outside dimensions, and depth. It can measure to an accuracy of one thousandth of an inch and onehundredth of a millimeter. The caliper has two sets of jaws, one each on the upper and lower portions.

ii. Used in calibration of quantities where measures lie between the measures defined on scale.

iii.Used in measuring radius of bore capillary by microscope in surface tension.

iv.Used to measure the diameter and thereby, radius of various kinds of cylindrical pipes and spheres.
