1. Both Nikola and jacopi we're dignified and full of self respect. They didn't have any complaints against fate. Rather they believed in fighting their own battle in life. They didn't like shoulders to lean upon. Hence they kept their problems to themselves.
2. The two boys usually had black bread and figs because they were saying money for their sister who was admitted to the hospital as she was suffering from tuberculosis of spine.
1) Because they did not wanted to disclose their problem to narrator and they so not want to loose their dignity and self respect by asking anyone fir sympathy or financial help.
2) they only ate bread and figs. Because they wanted to save the money to pay the fees of the hospital in which their sister was who was suffering from tuberculosis of spine.
