Question:-

The product of two consecutive odd numbers is 10 more than the square of the smaller number. Find the smaller number.

Given:-

  • Product of numbers = 10 + (Smaller number)²

To find:-

  • Smaller odd number = ?

Solution:-

Let the smaller odd number be n

∴Another odd number = (n + 2)

According to question:-

⇒ n(n + 2) = 10 + n²

⇒ n² + 2n = 10 + n²

⇒ n² + 2n - n² = 10

⇒ 2n = 10

⇒ n = 10/2

n = 5

\rule{150}{1}

⋆ CONSECUTIVE ODD NUMBERS:-

↠ Smaller odd number = n = 5

↠ Larger odd number = n + 2 = 5 + 2 = 7

Therefore,

\therefore\underline{\textsf{Smaller consecutive odd number = {\textbf{5 }}}}

Verification:-

⇒ 7 × 5 = 10 + 5²

⇒ 35 = 10 + 25

35 = 35 [Verified!]
