DEFINITIONS

1. In linguistics, a participle is a nonfinite form of a verb which functions as an adjective or an adverb. For example, in "boiled potato", boiled is the past passive participle of the verb boil, modifying the noun potato.

2. A gerund (/ˈdʒɛrənd, -ʌnd/ abbreviated GER) is any of various nonfinite verb forms in various languages; most often, but not exclusively, one that functions as a noun. In English, it has the properties of both verb and noun, such as being modifiable by an adverb and being able to take a direct object.

3. In the Germanic languages, a strong verb is a verb that marks its past tense by means of changes to the stem vowel. The majority of the remaining verbs form the past tense by means of a dental suffix, and are known as weak verbs.

4. In Germanic languages, weak verbs are by far the largest group of verbs, which are therefore often regarded as the norm, though they are not historically the oldest or most original group.
