Time Arnav spends in studies ⇒ 1\frac{3}{4} hours

Time Arnav spends in playing cricket ⇒ 2\frac{1}{2} hours

Time Arnav spend in all ⇒ 1\frac{3}{4}+2\frac{1}{2}

Step 1: Convert the mixed fraction to improper fraction. To do so we need to multiply the whole number part to the denominator of the fractional part and add the product to the numerator of the fractional part. The number we obtain will be the numerator. The denominator of the improper fraction will be the same as the denominator in the fractional part of the mixed fraction.

1\frac{3}{4}=\frac{(1\times4)+3 }{4}=\frac{7}{4}

2\frac{1}{2}=\frac{(2\times 2)+1 }{2}=\frac{5}{2}

Step 2: Find the LCM of the denominators.

\begin{array}{r | l} 2 & 4,2 \\ \cline{2-2} 2 & 2,1 \\ \cline{2-2}  & 1,1 \\ \end{array}

∴LCM of 2 and 4 is ⇒ 2\times 2 =4

Step 3: Make the denominators equal.

\frac{7\times 1}{4\times 1 } =\frac{7}{4}

\frac{5\times 2 }{2\times 2 } =\frac{10}{4}

Step 4: Add the numerators and let the denominator be the same in the sum.

\frac{7}{4}+\frac{10}{4}=\frac{17}{4}

Step 5 (optional): Convert the improper to the mixed fraction.

\frac{17}{4}=4\frac{1}{4}

∴ Arnav spends \frac{17}{4}=4\frac{1}{4} hours in all.
