Question:

15) A man moves 4 m towards East and 3 m towards North.

a. Calculate the distance and displacement by the man.

b. Define average speed.

c. How motion and rest are relative terms.

Required solution:

a.

Provided that:

• A man moves 4 m towards East and 3 m towards North.

  • Refer to attachment for better understanding.

Distance:

→ Distance A + Distance B

→ Distance = 4 m + 3 m

→ Distance = 7 m

  • Therefore, distance is 7 metres.

Displacement:

→ The shortest distance between two points that is the initial point and final position is known as displacement.

Here we have to imply phythagoras theorm as we are able to see that the diagram is looking like a right angled triangle.

→ (Hypotenuse)² = (Perpendicular)² + (Base)²

→ (H)² = (P)² + (B)²

→ (H)² = (4)² + (3)²

→ (H)² = 16 + 9

→ (H)² = 25

→ H = √25

→ H = 5 m

  • Therefore, displacement = 5 m

b.

Average speed: Total distance travelled by a body per unit time is known as average speed. Average speed is a scalar quantity. It have only magnitude not direction.

c.

Motion and rest are relative terms because they depend upon each other. An object may be in motion or rest too according to their conditions.

Rest: A body is said to be at rest when its position does not change with respect to the reference point.

Motion: A body is said to be in motion when its position is changing with respect to the reference point. \:
