18 (i) Concept :-

Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract electrons to itself in a chemical bond.

• As the size of atom decreases left to right in a period, the value of nuclear charge [force of attraction experienced by electrons due to the nucleus] increases. Hence the electronegativity of the atoms increase.

• In a similar way, the atomic size of atoms increase down in a group which decreases the electronegativity.

Answer To Question :-

Applying the known concept, B,E and C lie in the 16th, 15th and 13th groups respectively, which tells us B is the most electronegative element following E and C.

Hence the order is, C < E < B.

18 (ii) Concept :-

Metallic character signifies how easily an element can loose electrons.

• Going down a group the atomic size increases which decreases the force of attraction between nucleus and the electrons, hence metallic character increases.

• Similarly, across a period the atomic size decreases which increases the metallic character.

Answer To Question :-

Applying concept, increasing order of metallic character is D < A < C.
