Question :-

The mean of 15 observations is 32. Find the resulting mean, if each observation is:

(i) increased by 3

(ii) decreased by 7

(iii) multiplied by 2

(iv) divided by 0.5

(v) increased by 60%

(vi) decreased by 20%

Answer

(Given)

Mean of 15 observations = 32

(Solution)

(i) increased by 3

If each no. is increased by 3 then the resulting mean will also be increased by 3.

That is,

= 32 + 3

= 35

•°• New mean = 35

(ii) Decreased by 7.

If each no. is decreased by 7 then the resulting mean will also be decreased by 7.

That is,

= 32 - 7

= 25

•°• New mean = 25

(iii) Multiplied by 2

If each no. is multiplied by 2 then the resulting mean will also be multiplied by 2.

That is,

= 32 × 2

= 64

•°• New mean = 64

(iv) Divided by 0.5

If each no. is divided by 0.5 then the resulting mean will also be divided by 0.5

That is,

 \dfrac{32}{5} \times 10 = 62

•°• New mean = 62

(v) Increased by 60%

If each no. is increased by 60% then the resulting mean will also be increased by 60%.

 = 32 + \dfrac{60}{100} \times 32

= 32 + 19.2

= 51.2

•°• New mean = 51.2

(vi) Decreased by 20%

If each no. is decreased by 20% then the resulting mean will also be decreased by 20%

That is,

32- \dfrac{20}{100} \times 32

32-6.4=25.6

•°• New mean = 25.6
