Reason:

It is given that, x + 1/x = 2              --eqn1.

Now,

 (x + 1/x ) ^2 =  x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2

therefore, x^2 + 1/x^2  =    ( x + 1/x )^2 - 2                     ( by transposing)

Now substituting eqn1 here,

2 ^2 = x2 + 1/x2 + 2

thus, x2 + 1/x2 = 2.
