Hydrochloric acid is produced in stomach to maintain the ph and digestion of stomach but it is already there because the main function of stomach is of digestion and making the chyme food in to chyle process

HCl activates the pepsinogen to pepsin . breaks down protien further into peptides and then the process of digestion is further taken place in the stomach
