When Veerappan's driver, Sarvanan ,slammed the brakes of his cream coloured tempo Traveller on a desolate road between paddy
fields, opened the door and fled into the darkness, the canny bandit must have figured it was time to fight back.
There was a truck parked across the road, blocking the way. Another truck pulled up behind the van. All of this happened within a
few seconds. Soon announcements screeched out on hailers, urging the notorious bandit to surrender. But he didn't. Not
Veerappan, the man responsible for the death of many policemen.
The police said he tried to shoot his way out of the trap but this
time there was no escaping.
The Special Task Force men returned fire, spraying the van with bullets. In a gunfight lasting 20 minutes, one of India's most wanted
man was dead.
