Answer:

x=3 and y=2

Step-by-step explanation:

2^x + 3^y = 17 ----(1)

2^(x+2) - 3^(y+1) = 5

=> 2^2×2^x - 3×3^y = 5

=> 4×2^x - 3×3^y = 5 ----(2)

let a = 2^x and b = 3^y

so equation (1) and (2) become,

a+b = 17

=> a = 17-b----(3)

4a-3b = 5

=> 4(17-b) -3b = 5

=> 68 - 4b - 3b = 5

=> 7b = 63

=> b = 9

=> 3^y = 9 =3^2

=> y=2

putting b in (3),

a = 17-b = 17-9 = 8

=> 2^x = 8 = 2^3

=> x=3
