Question
Keeping " the happy prince" in mind bring out the idea of real happiness . Was the happy prince really happy ?
Answer
When the Happy Prince was alive, he lived in a palace where sorrow was not allowed to enter. He played in the garden in the daytime and danced in the Great Hall in the evening. Everything was so beautiful and so easy to him. People looked up the Happy Prince with an admiration and a longing for his fully happy life. But his saying “Happy indeed I was, if pleasure be happiness,” doesn't sound like an affirmative. If the Happy Prince continued to live in such a sorrow-immune palace, he was never aware of real happiness. Just when he was set up high and saw “all the ugliness and all the misery” of his city, he began to understand what it was. Seeing poor people living in misery, his heart “cannot choose but weep.” Then, it was warmer and thrilled when these people were so happy to receive his help. And when he did that, he felt what the true happiness is. People destroyed his heart. But he never had to die but lived happily in the heaven.
One day Happy prince meet swallow. allow helped him. That is kindness in a moment, because at that time he still thinking of the South, of Egypt and his friends there. He did not think much about misery or happiness of people, as he said, “thinking always makes me sleepy”. But then, when the prince has given both of his sapphire eyes, the Swallow decided not to leave him, although he knew that he would be death if he stayed longer, for the winter is coming. He carried the prince’s gift to the poor, and told stories about all the things he saw. He was the prince’s friend, the greatest friend that one can desire about. Then, of course, he died.
Therefore, pleasure is not happiness. Oscar Wild created the character of the Happy Prince and The Swallow to say that happiness did not come form simple pleasure or selfish enjoyment, but it came from a deep understanding of the value of love. His love was so strong that he could sacrifice himself for the happiness of the others. Just when he gave away all of his things, he was receiving an invaluable thing which is real happiness.
Moral
The moral of the story is that we must help the poor and the needy. The prince set an example of this by giving his jewels to the poor. The swallow also proved to be a great example of love and sacrifice.
Happy Prince was not happy because he can see the people and their pains or troubles through his sapphire eyes.
