The application of chemical fertilizers can increase the crop yields quickly, but they also could cause soil hardening and decrease soil organic matter after a long period of application, resulting in loss of soil productivity. To restore fertility he could either use compost or leave the land fallow( not grow anything on the land for a while so that it can naturally regain fertility).
