Given:

  • The two elements P and Q
  • The atoms of the two elements are distributed in three shells
  • Valence electrons = 1 and 7 respectively

(i) The group numbers in which these elements are placed in the modern periodic table:-

We know,

✦Elements having valence electron 1 belong to group 1 i.e., Alkali metals.

✦And, elements having 7 valence electrons belong to group 17 i.e.,Halogens.

As valence electrons of P = 1 , P belongs to group 1

And, valence electrons of Q = 7,Q belongs to group 17

(ii)Electronic configuration of P and Q:-

We have,

  • No.of.shells = 3
  • Valence electrons of P=1
  • Valence electrons of Q=7

Therefore,the electronic configuration:

P =  1s² 2s² 2p⁶3s¹

Q = 1s² 2s² 2p⁶3s²3p⁵

(iii)Molecular formula of compound formed between P&Q:-

We can see,

The element P has one excess electron and Q has 7 electrons.

The elements Q needs one more electron & P needs to lose one electron to fulfill the octet configuration.

Hence, P gives one electron to Q.

Therefore,

The compound formed is PQ.

To Know more:-

The element with configuration 1s² 2s² 2p⁶3s¹ is Na

The element with configuration  is 1s² 2s² 2p⁶3s²3p⁵ is Cl

And, the compound formed:

Na + cl ----> Nacl
