An alloy is a combination of a metal with at least one other metal or nonmetal. The combination must be part of a solid solution, a compound, or a mixture with another metal or nonmetal in order for it to be considered an alloy.

The majority of alloy are prepared by mixing metals in the molten state; then the mixture is poured into metal or sand molds and allowed to solidify. Generally the major ingredient is melted first and then the others are added to it and should completely dissolve.

The properties of iron change when-

(i) When we add small quantity of carbon and we know that alloy has very high strength and alloy has ability to alerted by heat treatment and formed alloy is known as steel. It becomes strong and hard.

(ii) When we add nickel and chromium in steel then high resistance is enhanced with heat resistance and it's tensile strength increases, alloy formed is known as stainless steel. It becomes strong and corrosion resistant.
