Solution :-
Given data -
8, 14, 16, 21, x, y, 28, 30, 33, 38
y - x = 2 .............(1)
Median of the given data = 25
N = 10
There is an even number of results. So, the median will be the mean of the two central numbers.
Median = [(N + 1)/2th item]
⇒ 25 = [(10 + 1)/2th item]
⇒ 25 = (11/2)th item
⇒ 5.5th item
⇒ 25 = (5th item + 6th item)/2
⇒ 25 = (x + y)/2
⇒ x + y = 25*2
⇒ x + y = 50 ..........(2)
Adding x + y = 50 and y - x = 2
x + y = 50
- x + y = 2
___________
2y = 52
___________
2y = 52
y = 52/2
y = 26
Putting y = 26 in y - x = 2
y - x = 2
26 - x = 2
- x = 2 - 26
- x = - 24
x = 24
So, the value of x is 24 and the value of y is 26.
Option (2) is correct.
