a) ‘burning bowels’- The poet uses it as a metaphor to describe the snake hole in the earth. Alliteration has also been used.
b) The poet describes the snake with the word ‘earth’ because the snake emerges from the soil/earth. Also, the brownish-goldenish colour of the snake is best described using the earth as a shade card. It adds to the imagery and also establishes a strong connection between the snake and the earth. Later in the poem, the snake is also called the ‘king’, presumably of the underworld.
c) The poet’s reference to Etna is an attempt to convey a sense of tactile sensation, to tell the reader about the temperature of the place. It was probably the heat that drove the snake to the water trough. Had it not been that hot, the snake would probably never have emerged, and the poet would not have had an encounter with it.
