in any atom, the atomic number is equal to the number of protons and electrons. mind you, I am talking about atoms ONLY, not ions.

lithium has 3 protons and nitrogen has 7 protons. as there are 3 lithium atoms and one nitrogen atom, there are 3×3+7=7+9=16 protons
