REACTIONS:

  1. Non-metals react with oxygen to form non-metal oxides. Non-metal oxides are acidic in nature. They turn blue litmus to red. Sulphurous acid turns blue litmus to red showing it is an acid and that sulphur dioxide is acidic in nature.
  2. Metals react with water to form hydroxides , generally non-metal do not react with water.
  3. Metals give hydrogen gas when they react with dilute acid.Generally, non-metals do not react with dilute acid.
  4. Metals give hydrogen gas when they react with a base.Reaction of non-metals with bases are complex.

EXAMPLES:

  1. 1)Sodium is a very reactive metal, therefore sodium metal react violently even with cold water. 2)Magnesium is less reactive metal so it react slowly with cold water,it reacts rapidly only with hot boiling water. ... 4)The metals like copper, silver and gold are so un reactive that they react with water or even steam.
  2. Reaction of non-metals with oxygen: They react with oxygen to form acidic oxides or neutral oxides. Reaction of non-metals with water: They do not react with water (steam) to evolve hydrogen gas. ... Reaction of non-metal with chlorine: They are react with chlorine to form covalent chlorides which are non- electrolytes.

  1. The reactions of carbon and sulfur with oxygen are examples of non-metals reacting with oxygen. Carbon and sulfur both form dioxides with oxygen, but this is not true of all non-metals.
  2. The three examples we learnt about were: magnesium + oxygen → magnesium oxide. iron + oxygen → iron oxide. copper + oxygen → copper oxide.

  1. Acids react with most metals and, when they do, a salt is produced .magnesium + hydrochloric acid → magnesium chloride + hydrogen.
  2. Non-metals do not react with acids. This is due to the fact that a substance undergoing reaction with acids, donates electrons to the H+ ions produced by the acids. But non-metals are acceptor of electrons and hence they do not donate electron to the hydrogen ion of the acid.

  1. Zinc metal also react with sodium hydroxide solution to form hydrogen gas. All the metals do not react with bases to form salt and hydrogen.
  2. Some non-metals react with bases but no hydrogen gas is produced. Some metals are chemically very reactive whereas other metals are less reactive or un reactive.
