What is a cell?

Cell is the fundamental structural and functional unit of life. Cells are like bricks in the building. In living world, organisms differ from one another but all are made up of cells. Cells constitute basic dunctionak unit where many cells are assembled to make an organism.

We all have heard a question, does the shape and size of cells vary? Answers is Yes! Shape of the cells vary. It appears in different sgaoes and it keeps changing its shape. Let us take an example of Amoeba.

  • Amoeba has irregular shape.
  • Amoeba projects out (attachement #1) of varying lenght and protruding out of its body for locomotion and feeding.
  • This projection is called pseudopodia.

WBC in humans is an another example which changes its shape. It is because it has function to fight against bacterias and protect the body.

Some cells such as blood cell, muscle cell, and nerve cell have different shapes and relate to their different functions. The size varies from smallest cell - 0.1-0.5mm and the largest cell - 170×130mm.
