Let speed of stream = x
Speed in downstream = (5+x) km/h
speed in upstream = (5-x) km/h
Time req. to cover 40km in downstream = 40/5+x
time required to cover 40 km upstream = 40 / 5-x
ATP.
40/5-x = 3* (40/5+x)
or, 1/5-x = 3/(5+x)
or 5+x = 3 (5-x)
or 5+x = 15 - 3x
or, 4x = 10
or, x = 10/4 = 5/2 = 2.5
Therefore, speed of stream is 2.5 km/h
