Generation Gap
“A chasm, amorphously situated in time and space, that separates those who have grown up absurd from those who will, with luck, grow up absurd” (Generation Gap)
-Bernard Rosenberg
More often than not, we are faced with varied, conflicting opinions whilst in conversation with someone older or younger to us. Having different opinions and ideas do not suggest that one of them is right and the other wrong. It does, however, suggest that age difference creates a drift in thinking which in turn creates a change in actions in one generation which may or may not be acceptable to other generations. This drift is what we term as the generation gap.
“A generation gap or generational gap, is a difference of opinion between one generation and another regarding beliefs, politics, or values. In today’s usage, ‘generation gap’ often refers to a perceived gap between younger people and their parents or grandparents.”
The origin of the term ‘Generation Gap’ is said to be around the 1960s when the renowned sociologist Karl Mannheim observed various kinds of differences among generations and how the generations differed from one another on a number of fronts. The younger generation had queries; they questioned the ways of the world and went against a lot of things that their parents firmly believed in. From religious beliefs to political ideologies to their dressing sense to the kind of music they listen to, the movies they prefer watching to their socio-economic opinions and stances, moral values and even their relationship type, generation gap has led to several changes in the society. And this change is ever expanding
Causes for Generation Gap
Where the older generations preferred a ‘Joint Family System’, caring and sharing, the newer generations are more inclined towards ‘Nuclear families’. Since the world is constantly changing, ‘Generation Gap’ is a natural phenomenon and quite an interesting one on that. It is exceedingly important to bridge this ‘Generation Gap’ and to try and understand it for harmony within and without the families. Parents should understand the point-of-view of their children, and be mindful of their psyche. Children, along with the same line, should respect their parents and their opinions and in turn understand the fact that their parents want what is best for them, though their approach might be more ‘orthodox’. Both the generations should build a kind of friendship in order to know that both the generations are bound to differ from one another. They are going to have differences in opinion and that it is only natural for such differences to occur. It is therefore essential to recognize and embrace the differences without imposing one’s ideas on the other.
Conclusion Paragraph on Generation Gap
Imagine the times when the older generations taught their children the meaning of an ‘apple’ and a ‘blackberry’ and then picture how the new generation is now teaching their children the features of APPLEs and BLACKBERRYs. This is where ‘Generation Gap’ is leading us and only time will tell whether it is for the good or for the bad.
Perhaps, instead of finding flaws in the other generations, we must observe and accept how every generation is different from the other and yet is quite similar.
