Answer (i) No work is said to be done on the vanity case as it is in a state of rest when the woman is holding it.

(ii) Work is said to be done if the woman is climbing a staircase as when she goes higher , she needs to exert a force to balance the frictional force acting opposite to her direction of movement, also gravitational forces are pulling her down as she goes up so she has to exert more force to hold the vanity case to keep it in place.
