Given:

Distance between school(S) and home(H)= 3 Km

Distance between school(S) and book shop(B)= 500m= 0.5 km

To Find:

Distance and displacement of student from home to Book shop

Solution:

We know that,

  • Distance is the length of actual path covered by body
  • Displacement is the shortest distance between starting and final position

\rule{190}{1}

Let the distance covered by student be D and displacement of student be d

According to question,

\longrightarrow\rm{D=HS+SB}

\longrightarrow\rm{D=3+0.5}

\longrightarrow\rm\green{D=3.5\:km}

Also,

\longrightarrow\rm\green{d=HS-SB}

\longrightarrow\rm\green{d=3-0.5}

\longrightarrow\rm\green{d=2.5\:km\:towards\:S}

Hence, distance covered by student is 3.5 km and displacement of student is 2.5 km towards S.

Displacement :

Let the distance covered by student be D and displacement of student be d

According to question,

\implies D=H\;to\;S+S\;to\;B\\\\\implies D=3\;+\;0.5\\\\\bold{\implies D=3.5\;km}

Also,

\implies d=HS-SB\\\\\implies d=3\;-\;0.5\\\\\bold{\implies d =\;2.5\;km}

Hence, distance covered by student is 3.5 km and displacement of student is 2.5 km towards S.
