Let the common factor of the ratio be x.
Hence,
Present age of A=4x
Present age of B=5x
After 4 years,
Age of A=4x + 4
Age of B=5x + 4
According to the question,
(4x + 4)/(5x+4)=14/17
[Cross-multiplying]
(68x + 68)=(70x + 56)
(68x - 70x)=(56-68)
-2x=-12
x=6
Hence, B’s present age=5x=5(6)=30 years.
Hence,
Present age of A=4x
Present age of B=5x
After 4 years,
Age of A=4x + 4
Age of B=5x + 4
According to the question,
(4x + 4)/(5x+4)=14/17
[Cross-multiplying]
(68x + 68)=(70x + 56)
(68x - 70x)=(56-68)
-2x=-12
x=6
Hence, B’s present age=5x=5(6)=30 years.
