Answer (a) The fusion of male and female gametes, is known as Fertilization.

Answer (b) During copulation, semen is released by the penis into the vagina of female, called insemination. Once ejaculated in the semen, it lives only for 48-72 hours outside the body. Sperms moves in the liquid medium secreted by female genital tract at a speed of 1.5-3.0 mm/minute. Prostaglandins of semen help in the movement of spermatozoa. Once the sperms are released Capacitation of sperm occurs in the female genital system and involves :-

(1) Removal of membrane cholesterol present over acrosome in sperm, weakening the membrane cover.

(2) Dilution of Decapacitation factors.

(3) Entry of CA+2 ions into sperms and transportation into ampullary-isthmic junction of the fallopian tubes. The ovum is released by the ovary is also transported there, where Fertilization occurs. Fertilization only occurs if both ovum and sperm are transported simultaneously at the ampullary-isthmic junction.
