It is a type of error in which an instrument gives a reading when the true reading at that time is zero.

Zero reading

  • Before taking any measurement it is good to practice to close the jaws or faces of the instrument to make sure that the reading is zero.
  • If it is not then note the reading.
  • This reading is called zero reading.
  • Zero reading is of 2 types

      * Positive reading

      * Negative reading.

a) Positive Zero reading

  • If the zero is on the vernier scale is to the right of the main scale , then the error is said to be positive zero error.
  • The zero reading should be subtracted from the reading which is measured.

b) Negative zero reading
