The population of A is 18030 and population of B is 48080 and population of C is 19232

Solution:

The ratio of the population of town A and town B is 3:8, while the ratio of towns B and C is 5:2

Therefore,

A : B = 3 : 8

B : C = 5 : 2

Multiply first ratio by 5

A : B = 15 : 40 ---- eqn 1

Multiply second ratio by 8

B : C = 40 : 16 ------ eqn 2

Combine eqn 1 and eqn 2

A : B : C = 15 : 40 : 16

Let population of A be 15x

Let population of B be 40x

Let population of C be 16x

population of the three towns is 85 342

Therefore,

15x + 40x + 16x = 85342

71x = 85342

x = 1202

Thus,

population of A = 15x = 15(1202) = 18030

population of B = 40x = 40(1202) = 48080

population of C = 16x = 16(1202) = 19232

Thus population of A is 18030 and population of B is 48080 and population of C is 19232
