Fish breathe with their gills, and they need a constant supply of oxygen. Gills sit under the operculum. This is called the gill slit. We know that for rusting, the presence of both oxygen and water (water vapour) is essential. Thus, in coastal areas, the air contains high moisture which means more humid environment and rusting becomes faster. In our case, baking soda is sodium bicarbonate (a base) and vinegar is diluted acetic acid. When they react to release the OH and H to become water, they also release carbon dioxide. This makes the reaction bubble and expand, just like when you shake up a can of soda and open it!
