When there is no koh co2 is not observed and partial vacuum will not be created, so there won't be a rise in the level of water
So we might think that no co2 is released during respiration

KOH is a good absorbent.

KOH absorbs the carbon dioxide released . If one forgot to put KOH, content of CO2 will vary.i.e it will be more .
