Nainital was the summer capital of the United Provinces. Nainital is located in the Kumaon foothills of the outer Himalayas at a distance of 285 km (177 mi) from the state capital Dehradun and 345 km (214 mi) from New Delhi, the capital of India.

erchant P. BarronAccording to recent historical records, Nainital was discovered by a British sugar merchant P. Barron in 1839. He was so deeply enthralled by the lake settlement and its forested surrounding that he came back with a sailing boat and built a house named 'Pilgrim's Cottage'.

Some believe that the hill station derived its name from the goddess Naina. There is also a temple dedicated to Naina Devi in Nainital. Others say that it is probably the Naini Lake in Nainital that lends its name to the hill resort. The hill station of Nainital offers several places of interest to the tourists.
