Capital Punishment Vs Human Rights.

Explanation:

The recent verdict which ordered death penalty to the four convicts of Nirbhaya gang-ra pe has become a bone of contention among various organizations particularly between human rights activists and those in favor of such punishments. Human rights activists see capital punishment as the worst from of human treatment though convicted of heinous crimes. They out-rightly rejects imposing capital punishment to any convict.

However, the debate to abolish or use death penalty remains a controversial topic India. The presence of high criminal rates and rapes in the country has become a major reason and background for such punishments to be exercised as a deterrent.  Heinous crimes such as the 'Nirbhaya' case puts a question into our heads about the safety of our women in the country. It has become hard for the stakeholders to choose between human rights and popular sentiment on bringing justice to such heinous crimes.

The UN strongly rejects capital punishments and firmly believes that there is no provisions for such cruel acts in the 21st century. Today,  50 countries still allow death penalty  to convicts of heinous crimes. India is one among those countries which has not abolished capital punishment though numerous international bodies like Amnesty International, U.N, etc appeal.

India, however, gives capital punishment very rarely and only 26 executions have taken place in the country since 1991 . The latest capital punishment verdicts will the four convicts of Nirbhaya gang-ra pe which is scheduled on the 3rd of March, 2020.

The bone of contention between the various organization arises here. Chances are there that the date of death row may be extended due to numerous activists' pressures. Just recently, similarly pressures from activists' groups have forced the Supreme Court to extend the date to March 3, 2020 from February 1, 2020, the original scheduled date. Popular sentiment groups believe that such punishment will send a message to all the potential criminals all over the country. They believe that such move by the Supreme Court will act as a deterrent to similar future crimes. Thus, they do not want the court to delay the verdict anymore.
