Indirect/Reported Speech refers to a dialogue being told to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: He said, "I'm looking for my book." (Direct)

He said that he was looking for his book. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'this' changes to 'that', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'will' changes to 'would', 'can' changes to 'could' and many other words will have to be made. Also, if the sentence contains an interrogation, then 'said' changes to 'asked'. Punctuation marks other than a full stop (.) cannot be used in indirect/reported speech.

1. I said to him, "I was there yesterday." (Direct)

  • I told him that I had been there the previous day. (Indirect)

2. You say to me, "Did you follow the class?" (Direct)

  • You ask me if I had followed the class. (Indirect)

3. My teacher said to me. "How are you today?" (Direct)

  • My teacher asked me how I was that day. (Indirect)

4. He said to his friends, "Let's join the birthday party." (Direct)

  • He told his friends that they should join the birthday party. (Indirect)

5. She said to you, "What a fool you are!" (Direct)

  • She exclaimed to me that I was a fool. (Indirect)
