Example 3.1 (a) Calculate the relative molecular mass of water (H2O). (b) Calculate the molecular mass of HNO3.

Solution:-

(a)

We know,

Unified mass of Hydrogen = 1 u

Unified mass of Oxygen = 16 u

Thus, molecular mass becomes:-

(1 u × 2) + (16 u × 1)

= 2 u + 16 u

= 18 u Ans.

(b)

We know,

Unified mass of Hydrogen = 1 u

Unified mass of Oxygen = 16 u

Unified mass of Nitrogen = 14 u

Thus, molecular mass becomes:-

(1 u × 1) + (14 u × 1) + (16 u × 3)

= 1 u + 14 u + 48 u

= 15 u + 48 u

= 63 u Ans.
