Aim:

To show chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis using variegated leaves.

Procedure:

  1. Take a potted plant with verigenated leaves.
  2. keep the plant in dark room for 3 days so that all the starch gets used up.
  3. Now keep the plant in sunlight for 6 hours so that it can make food.
  4. Pluck one of the leaf from the plant.
  5. Mark the green areas on the leaf and trace them on a sheet of paper.
  6. dip the leaves and boiling water.
  7. after putting the leaf in boiling water, immerse sit in the beaker containing alcohol.
  8. the colour of the leaf changes.
  9. dip the leaf in the dilute solution of iodine.
  10. after diping rinse off the iodine solution.
  11. observe the changes.

Observations:

We observed that the the green areas that we have marked on the leaf have changed their colour hence showing that chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis.
