In the monohybrid cross of true breeding pea plant the pure homozygous tall plant has two factors'TT' for the trait tallness and the pure homozygous dwarf plant has two factors 'tt' for the trait dwarfness. The factors of inheritance of tallness separate into two gametes as T and T and the dwarfness separate into two gametes as t and t.The gametes of tall pea plant cross with the gametes of dwarf pea plant in the first generation and the progeny appeared to be tall plants. Thus, the first generation. possesses one factor of inheritance from one parent plant.

Now,all the progeny of first generation i.e. heterozygous tall plant have two factors T and t and are said to be phenotypically dominant. When the progeny of F1 are self crossed they produce 3 dominant tall and 1 recessive dwarf plants. In other words it have 3 types of genotype, homozygous,TY , heterozygous tall,Tt and homozygous dwarf tt.Since the genotypic ratio will be TT:Tt:tt=1:2;1
